Clear explanation 👍
Glad you liked it
Thanks for the video Bill! I’ve been contemplating whether to go the school route like getting my online degree with WGU and do audit / tax, or go the bookkeeping route. I enjoy accounting tho 👍🏼
I think it’s very difficult to get a job as a bookkeeper with only a high school degree. Even university graduates with Business degrees are not finding jobs. I think people should get realistic expectations and realize most of the jobs ask for previous job experience. But where you get the first experience is the funny part.
If you only have HS diploma you will have to accept minimum wage in an entry level bookkeeping role. To get that, you’ll need to show some initiative by learning online (videos/courses) to that you can draft a good resume that shows you’ve already taken these self-learning steps. So essentially you’ll work your way from $15/hr to $50/hr over the course of 5 years.
Thank you Mr Hanna.
This is a very informative video for me.
I am a Bookeeper in Canada. I was thinking of improving my financial situation by opening up a small business.
Your video just showed me a clear way.
Speaking as a NY’er. When I first began working as a BK, it was literally the scenario he described in the video. I was hired for a clerical position but in small businesses, you wear many hats, but I had no degree. I am now a CMA candidate and MBA working in finance. So it’s possible to find work as a BK with no degree. The market values the BK knowledge more than degrees, especially if you’ve had BK positions. If you’re starting off, and want to work in BK, I would try to think about past gigs where you did SOME KIND of BK type of work and highlight those tasks.
@TheFinancialController I study accounting and passed Intuit International exam. Currently I’m looking remote bookkeeping job most company they want with experience which I dont have it. 🙁
I worked as chief accountant in Ukraine more 15 years, after I learned and worked as chief financial officer more 12 years .
I passed bookkeeping course and payroll in Ireland. I good understand everything in accounting and financial accounting and can prepare financial statements BS, PnL, CF direct and indirect method.
I learning English financial to your video and would like to say you SO MUCH THANK ❤ for big help learning English financial
Great video, bookkeepers in Australia do more than AP / AR including closing the books, journal entries etc. I hold a bachelors of economics in Colombia and did an diploma & advanced diploma of accounting in Australia. Been doing bookkeping for small busineses for 5-6 years. Looking to get more of an accountant role, so decided to start the CPA. Hoping is the right pathway.
Sounds like a good plan/path. Thanks Natalia!
Make video about automation
Your videos are really helpful. Thank you!
You’re very welcome!
I appreciate your video. I am personally taking a bookkeeping certification path at a community college which requires 2 accounting courses and a payroll and tax course. I also took online Xero and QuickBooks Online certifications because on my facebook group even accountants are trying to learn the software. But the thing is that I also have Bachelor’s and Masters degree in statistics which helps me with analysis. I just don’t have many options in my Master’s field. So I am not really a typical bookkeeper without college, but I am too old to want to start the accounting path. It took me 6 months to set up my bookkeeping business and I do have one client so far to gain experience with the workflows.
Good for you! I think you’ll do great with your bookkeeping firm, it just takes time to build a client base
Hey respect masters in statistics shows your well educated I’ve been wanting to brush on some basic statistics any wisdom you can impart on what topics in statistics would musty apply to bookkeeping?😊
Changing jobs helped me to make $165k, after 5yrs, and 2 advanced degrees . Do NOT work for folks who refuse to see your value.
Nice job!
What degrees ?
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
Can you also do one with a specialized niche in Bookkeeping – Cryptocurrency, please?
i want to be remote accountant.
Those entry level positions he mentioned for bookkeepers especially are being offshored to India or pay around $11/hour. If you still live at home with your parents or have no bills, it’s a decent opportunity, but to make good money will still eventually require starting your own business and selling yourself and your services en masse to make any decent income.
As for accountants, if your market isn’t really good for accountants, the field is not worth entering, full stop. In most of the country, accountants with 5+ YOE are being offered under $50k. Target or Costco are literally better paying jobs.
Even the guy in the video would cap out in most of the US at around $75k, despite his decades of experience. If you can’t relocate where the jobs are, the field is not worth it. Period.
To add to this, less companies are interested in CPA and similar certifications because it infers a higher base pay or refused offer.
It’s not particularly a bad thing to obtain one (and they’re slowly lowering requirements to do so), but ill-advised like any excessive higher education without a current job in that field. It’s counting one’s chickens only to end up at Walmart for 20yrs with notable student loans 😭
But tbf, all fields are bad. Even the AI Bubble is bad as it’s starting to reach its inevitable implosion (ie “AI” ain’t actually AI while actual AI ain’t viable for 99.99% of businesses)
no pretty picture here. most of the open jobs i had were trash piles full of people “who have done it this way forever” and give terrible references because they do not want to implement (ie loose the their bleed off opportunities). go on your own right out of the gate.
Thanks god..u provide the subtittle😊
You’re welcome 😊
U look like tony stark
Im a quickbooks, proadvisor. This is correct. I started doing order entry in a factory and worked my way up to full bookeeper for almost 9 years. I opened my practice last year, and Im getting clients slowly because i haven’t advertised much since im working on my AE license while working a fulltime job where im actually the bookeeper and they are also my client as well 😅. So I manage both side of the company plus my other clients. My advise, do not stop studying and leaning and no even think you need to know everything to start, all you need is determination and desires to learn on the way and do the best you can to help the clients.
Thanks for sharing your experience/journey here
What is ae license
Im using odoo to learn QuickBooks could you specify the operation im trying to get someone cold texts all ignore and irl continue ignore and i lose time and it pisses me more

Is the Bookkeeper course finished? Looking forward to supporting you and spreading the news.
Yes. It’s titled “The Entry Level Accountant Academy”. Please enroll on my website:) thanks
So one fear I have is how AI will affect prospects for creating a bookkeeper business ? Will it make it harder To start and develop a business
I think the three to four year path to 100K is exaggerated. Accounting is not fast money like it is in sales when the economy is booming. When you graduate with an accounting degree you are lucky to find a job. Then you start as a bookkeeper and work your way to junior accountant, then staff accountant, then senior accountant (if you dont get stuck doing the same thing every day), then maybe manager or assistant controller if you go into private. Of course location like living in NY and talent play a role in this. But my opinion is accounting is slow in the beginning for the amount of work you have to put in but you can make the big bucks when you move up to manager and beyond and during a recession you will have a job.
After 10 years in public accounting as a Big 4 senior manager with my CPA designation, my move to corporate sent my salary up like crazy, but that first year of job-hopping was brutal emotionally. Now that I’ve landed in a role that fits me, my career (and sanity) are in a much better place.
