Create a Simple Novel Outline 📖 Story Beat Plotting Walk-Through // So…how do you outline a novel? Today's video is a little different from my usual videos. Because instead of sitting here watching me talk, I want you to outline your book with me. Today I'll be going over how I create a simple novel outline using story beats from the Save the Cat method. I'll be going through and explaining each story beat, and as I do, I want you to pause the video, and write a couple of bullet points to outline that specific plot point for your book. Choose to create your outline with me by opening up a blank page in My Novel Outline Planner, or downloading my Simple Novel Outline Google doc.

  1. Thx for this video. It really helped pull the STC Story Beats into manageable chunks!

QUESTION: Does STC also show how to wrap up a book if you are thinking of doing a series? I think my novel can be a series (but I’m trying to make it into a standalone with hints at a possible series). Any suggestions would be great! Thx again for the video. You’re awesome! 😊

    1. In ‘STC writes a young adult novel’ it has a section nearer the back of the book on series, along with multi pov. If that doesn’t help try ‘How to Launch a Successful Series’ by Helen B. Scheuerer.

  2. Hey Mandi – I have that book and wasn’t that sure about it – but your summary is brilliant – Thanks

    1. Though I can see how people might be drawn to Save the Cat, I feel like it’s SO strict when it comes to hitting plot milestones at very specific points/pages. I need something a little looser…

    2. While it may sound strict, it’s meant to act more as a guide. So there are story beats, but they aren’t always in this order, the length varies, and sometimes some story beats are missing altogether. I like to look at it as inspiration than a rigid template I have to follow.

  3. This video is the best! I tried reading the save the cat book, but I just wasn’t getting it. The way you break everything down and sum it all up is SO helpful. I feel like I can finally grasp these story beats! Thanks so much. ❤
