KDP UPDATE: Amazon Authors Are Making Less Royalties????

KDP has always paid its authors 60% royalty rates. On June 10th, it changed to 50% if you have your book priced at $9.98 or lower. This change stirred up a lot of commotion and even confusion. For example, when the change went into effect, my $11.99 book was flagged for having the 50% royalty rate change, and it was immediately clear why. But I did eventually figure it out, so my goal with this video is to clear things up and explain things for indie authors.

Watch Greg Gottfried's video:

Read about the minimum price you need to set your book at to hit the 60% threshold in other Amazon marketplaces:

  1. Do you have a video for a beginner about how to do the pricing for different countries please?

    1. When you get to the section where you select the price & region you’re selling in default U.S. you just scroll down. You have to scroll past it to save that section that’s where you would adjust localized pricing.

  2. I’m going to give you a massive piece of advice when it comes to Canada and Australia, Localize your prices take the royalty cut because you get more from sales through Amazons promoting your content through its algorithm than the extra $0.50 is worth if you sell 10 books at a lower margin than no books at $14 is it worth it?

    1. That’s definitely something to keep in mind! I’ll be doing more research into prices of comp titles and their prices as well.

  3. I am an author and self-publish on Amazon KDP books about end-of-life doulas (also known as death doulas), hospice nurses, holistic nurses, and caregivers for the chronically and terminally ill. Last year, I had all my caregivers print books priced at $9.95 for paperbacks, but raised the price to 11.95 (this was before the royalty change), more to reflect the value the books are intended to provide the reader. Thank you for bringing it to the international arena. I typically put in the price for all marketplaces (this was before the royalty change) because I saw that as the U.S. dollar fluctuates, we can underprice too easily.

  4. I first found out about this from Dale Roberts. I think I’m going to check the prices of my books in the other Amazon marketplaces too.

  5. Thanks for always updating on changes with self-publishing platforms. It’s really helpful.

  6. Wouldn`t it make more sense to have had a price drop for books below a certain word content? This will surely only put prices up like everything else in the world.

    1. @@MandiLynnWrites No, but their raise would then target more legitimate book types. A book that has had a lot of research and labour put into it will legitimately ask more for their publication. This raise encourages a rise in the price of small `easy` books for children and young people. If there was a model that targeted books over 20k words then it would leave the prices of lower content pb and smaller non-adult books. Some expensive publications look to be of low publishing cost and vice versa, so I don`t really understand the model based on a certain price bracket.

  7. Is there better alternative out there with better royalty rates and similar to KDP?

  8. My low content books went up from £5.99 to £7.19. It now makes it not worth it for me, as people won’t buy my books at that cost.
