I interviewed neuroscientist TJ Power about the 4 most important brain chemicals: Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins. This video is the first in a 4 part series where we explore each chemical in more depth, and how we can better understand it to improve our lives. Enjoy! xx

I got your book and I think the best I ever read on the topic of productivity 👍
@@aliabdaal sir I’m your big fan
I would love to join the lab but alas I can’t afford it
Can students also join focus labs?
Ali I follow you on other my other chanb but had to subscribe on here. Are you a neurodivergent or have ADHD? I ask because this video is on point with TJ. As a Health Informatics researcher, I’ve been researching and understanding my ADHD neurodivergent mind. The more I’m learning the more I know I have an imbalance in hormone because dopamine is a hormone. I’ve ve n procrastinating with a boom that I started and I’m ready to just do. Please tell me there’s payments or scholarships for your productivity lab?
I’m going to watch your videos the rest of the month to learn. Thank you ☺️
The simplest and actionable video on dopamine, sir
This is hilariously well-timed – I was searching for dopamine videos 2 hours ago and wishing you had a more recent one.
Incredible video mate! Loved shooting this with you 🤝🧠
One thing that has worked for me (which falls in the phone fasting category) is taking my dog for a walk immediately after I wake up. So literally, roll out of bed, put shoes on, leash him up, and get outside. It puts space between me and all the “normal” distractions that get in the way of a good morning. I get a good walk in, and then when I am home, the phone doesn’t really feel enticing at all.
Thankfully my dog is a good sport too because if he didn’t want to get up I’d be in trouble 😅
My dog would hate this, hahaha 🐕
I try to do this too and on the days I do, it makes SUCH a difference to my mood and my focus, it’s amazing how something so simple can totally change the trajectory of your day!

Funny you mention singing with a group – singing in a choir filled my cup like nothing else. I’m not an phenomenal singer by any means, but I experienced such moments of pure joy and euphoria. Sounds mad, but with the right group, it made me so happy, and really enriched my life. Highly recommend, but again, the right choir is vital!
Yes me too!
It’s gotten to the point where I have to sit and watch a movie while alternating between TikTok and candy crush to not feel withdrawal symptoms. It’s driving me insane
Same 😢
maybe you’re already insane and you just don’t know it yet?
Delete all apps. At first it is pain but then it feels wonderful
Why are you even on tiktok ?? Wake up maybe
@ exactly. Tik tok and snap chat are S”it😂😂😂
OMG Ali. This was amazing. I am a 47 year old mum of 18 year old who is struggling with lack of motivation. It’s been so difficult watching him struggle. He is a bright, sweet natured lovely young lad. He in fact introduced me to your channel. You are making such a difference to young people’s lives as an influencer and mentor. Keep up the good work!
❤❤❤
Tell your 18 y/o to get disciplined and stop searching for motivation. Motivation can only get you so far, but discipline is what keeps you going. Tell your son to not get lost in the world of productivity YouTube videos, because it’s very easy to fall into the trap of feeling fulfilled after watching another person do what YOU should be doing.
unfortunately everything he says is just theory. there is zero scientific evidence to prove anything he says. if you don’t believe me go ask your doctor to measure your dopamine levels in your brain.
@@nonsoottih7405 wish I knew this at 18.

Meditation and avoiding my phone 95% of the day has been a game changer for me.
So true like sometimes u feel that the thing which is shattering ur life is just phone
Btw I hope we all have that game changer instrument
How do you avoid your phone? Just put it in a separate room or airplane mode or something?
Yoga Nidra to close the open tabs in our brains
@@Cholaspen In my case, I have turned off notifications and uninstalled Instagram and TikTok since they are the apps that generate the most dopamine for me. I only stayed with YouTube, I think it is gentler on my brain and I love it.
Would you mind describing your meditation practice to me please?
The more details the better
I haven’t listened to music in anywhere in public, including on public transport or on walks, for years. I stopped doing it nearly ten years ago because I started becoming very anxious not being aware of my surroundings. Now, I honestly think it’s a game changer for me. Sure, it was “boring” at first but I can’t remember the last time I felt bored doing it. It makes doing things like going to the gym (something I do without music too) much more mindful and intentional. More recently, when I tried to make an effort to use my phone and social media less, it felt much easier as a result. Honestly I can’t recommend taking your headphones off and just trying out the world without Doja Cat in your ears more – though I appreciate it’s hard to get started. That said, I don’t think I could give up music on flights that are over 2 hours long, that’s too far even for me
This is such a great idea, thanks Ellie. Maybe this is why I feel so disconnected from the world sometimes, like I’m living in a dream, it’s the headphones!
This is sooo interesting. I started doing this as well recently and I thought perhaps I was overthinking it, but I just think there something to not having your mind occupied by externalities all the time. It has allowed my brain to think a lot more and come up with creative solutions or even just manage my thoughts when I feel anxious
This is a thing of my Status. Sometimes if i am very low, it is better to keep too much impressions away. Then i can go groceries shopping and come home calm. Without i would be stressed Out and very very tired. So i better stay in my headphone world. On other days it is time to interact more with the world around me and to hear and feel it. Then i get Joy from the Things i See and hear around me. Smiles, the scy, colours,…
It’s really true. Most of the time I’m out I enjoy being with myself and my thoughts.
I notice from time to time that music can cause more stress or uneasiness in me if I am overstimulated but music is often really nice to have and allows my emotions to feel understood.
Maybe not totally giving up music is the right decision. Not listening to music while going on a walk or being on your way to work, and instead making the moments at home where you do play music way more impactfull and fulfilling.
I rarely post comments on Youtube, but this video is extremely good and I think, rather than doomscrolling, many millions of people should watch this video and realize that they have a problem and that they have the power to change their behavior
10 years ago in my early 20s I went through a horrible year in my life where I “rotted” before it was spoken about. I became very depressed and agoraphobic. I could come to my front door, then I’d get so afraid and anxious that I’d crawl back into my home and try to forget that I was throwing away my education and social life. It was horrible. I don’t know how I got through it. I’m glad girls are talking about this online, perhaps they will fare better than I did.
And how are you now?
I’ve been trying very hard to avoid my phone and staying away from anything that is addictive. Some days I accidentally regress backwards, but on the days I stay away from my phone, it’s like a breath of fresh air. Sometimes it becomes a bit of a contradiction when I think back to the day before where I was so full of energy and felt great versus the sensation of rotting. I can’t express how important it is to maintain this and I’m glad this video explained it even further
I’m in deep trouble bro. I feel life nothing without internet. I hate myself but can’t get rid off.
yes, same. Freedom is one day at a time. And when it comes to addictions, it is a road of progress, not perfection. As mentioned, we need a goal, a mission, etc. And maybe it is like 1000 miles away. And we are really good at moving in that direction for days on end. But then one day we regress. It’s not like we all of a sudden got sent back to the start line. No. We have learned so much, grown such much, and started rewiring our minds. If anything, it’s like we got off at the wrong exit, and all we need to do is get back on the entrance ramp, and give our self compassion as we continue to move forward and get closer to that goal that is 1000 miles away, but just one day at a time. And have fun with it along the way.
The best advice I got was this “just do it” Sometimes it’s challenging just to open my laptop and study or have some work done, but everytime I apply that “just do it” I finish starting things.
JFDI
a tip for the “trouble starting stuff” thing: I used to do this in uni, i would tell myself I only have to work on the assignment for 5-10 mins. Then I can stop. But just start. That way I felt less pressure and actually got to start something. Sometimes I would stop after the 5 mins I would set but most of the time I would stay on doing the assignment. Starting is always the hardest part. And it was way easier to pick back up if i only did the 5 minutes bc i already started it, i wouldn’t be thinking “i’m starting it” my brain would more or less think of it as “i have to finish this” which was way easier than starting something
Thank you so much for creating this video. As a university student, I’ve been struggling to plan and focus on anything related to my studies or career. Discovering why I constantly distract myself with TikTok and Twitter has truly opened my eyes to the root causes of my addictions. I can’t thank you enough for this insight. Understanding and recognizing the negative patterns in my behavior and perspective has been incredibly transformative—so much so that it’s hard to put into words. I’ve watched this video and the entire series repeatedly, and now I’m taking notes and planning to implement these changes for the better. Thank you once again for your guidance and support.
Here is me watching every dopamine detox video on youtube to raise my current dopamine level ….
To anyone who’s suffering depression, anxiety, insomnia and other mental health problems, you are not alone. I feel you. You are so brave. You are doing so well. I’m proud of you. I’m sending you a virtual hug ❤ For me, it wasn’t therapy or meds that helped the most — it was reconnecting with myself. I started using the exercises in Shift Your Mind by Alexander Brooks, and it made me feel human again. The anxiety that used to control my whole day barely shows up now! 🙏❤
Optimizing dopamine is critical today !
Reducing time looking at shorts + learn to get bored really made me happier and more driven
The 15 min tip is simple but really effective. I’ve quit gaming and decided to replace that habit with reading more. Every time I procrastinate or get bored I tell my self just give it 15 mins and ease into it. I have read 150 pages of a fantasy fiction in 2 days thanks to this.
